It is an ancient mountain fortress located approximately 70 km from Bangalore city, and 3 km from Chikballapur in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is off Bellary Road ( NH 7 Hyderabad-Bangalore Highway), and overlooks Nandi Hills, Skanda Giri, popularly known as the Kalavara Durga, is a hill fortress that dates back to the time of Tipu Sultan, the famous ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore.
This ancient structure stands at an elevation of 1350 m on the Nandi Hill Ranges in Chikballapur, Karnataka. Visitors can see the ruins of the Tipu Sultan’s fort from Skanda Giri.
The fortress was constructed by a local king, who according to a legend successfully defended it from Tipu Sultan for several days.
Govardhanagiri which is next to the Nandi village is one among the famous holy places in the chikkaballapur taluk.
In the midst of nature and at the foot of Nandi hills, Govardhanagiri is also a well known spiritual centre. There is also an old and beautiful Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple atop the Govardhanagiri.
The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Narasimha Swamy and on either side of the sanctum sanctorum are Lord Vigneshwara and Sri Lakshmi.
Gopinath Betta is one such hill in a series of hills in east of Nandi hills, KarahalliCross, Chikkaballapur. Here people come to see the huge boulders and rocks, others to seek blessings at the Lakshmi-Narasimha temple.
